An Alternative to Pain Medication

Pills, Pills, and more Pills

Dr Sidney Wolfe, in Worst Pills, Best Pills (Wolfe et al. 1999), contends that too many physicians resort to prescribing narcotics and other chemical substances for the relief of pain, not necessarily because they don't know what else to offer, but because of the pharmaceutical industry's inordinate influence in the medical community. He believes that the billions of investment poured into pharmaceutical advertising is one of the biggest causes of the public's almost exclusive dependence on drugs for pain and other conditions.

Wolfe points out that all pain medications have potential adverse effects and that some actually kill thousands of people every year. He believes there are at least twenty commonly prescribed pain medications that are so dangerous they should be taken off the market. He lists thirty-nine others that should have only very limited use. Dr Wolfe quotes studies suggesting that an appallingly high percentage of physicians are insufficiently aware of just how dangerous some of their favourite drugs can be. He strongly recommends seeking proven nondrug remedies whenever possible before giving in to pharmaceutical solutions.
